Frequently smoking out of your glassware will quickly make your bowls, pipes, and bongs filthy. Here are step-by-step directions on how to clean your bong.
It a good idea to always keep your bongs, pipes, and bowls clean. Smoking with dirty glassware can harm your respiratory health. Therefore, spend a few minutes every month to keep your glassware clean. Here’s a simple and effective way to clean your dirty bongs with household items. The entire cleaning process will take 10 minutes or less.
Materials Needed to Get Started
- Dirty bong
- Plastic wrap
- Rubber bands
- Coarse ground salt (Kosher, Epson, or Sea Salt)
- Isopropyl rubbing alcohol
Step-By-Step Illustrated Bong Cleaning Instructions

Follow these easy steps to clean your bong.
- Remove the bowl
or male piece from the bong chamber. Set that aside. We’ll clean it last.
- Cover the stem hole
Cover the hole of the stem with plastic wrap or Press ‘N’ Seal®. Be sure to cover the entire surrounding area. Make sure you have a nice tight seal around the hole. You don’t want to get smelly, brown bong water everywhere.
- Tightly wrap the plastic wrap
Tightly wrap the plastic wrap with one or more rubber bands around the plastic wrap to prevent it from coming off during the shaking process.
- Add the coarse ground salt
Add the coarse ground salt into the bong. You can add about 1/4 of the length of the bong with salt. If you don’t have any coarse salt, you can use regular table salt. The salt is used to scrape the grime off the inside of the bong. The coarser salt will give help reduce the amount of shaking you will need to do.
- Add the isopropyl rubbing alcohol
After that, Add the isopropyl rubbing alcohol into the bong. You want to fill the bong about halfway full. You need to save room to shake the concoction around.
- Tightly wrap and cover the mouthpiece
Next, tightly wrap and cover the mouthpiece of the bong. Cover the mouthpiece with plastic wrap, then once again fasten the plastic wrap with rubber bands.
- Wrap rubber bands around the plastic wrap at the mouthpiece
Once again fasten the plastic wrap with rubber bands.
- It’s time to shake!
Finally, It’s time to shake! You might want to do this portion of the cleaning outside, in a garage, or near a sink. You can wear safety goggles to help protect your eyes. Place your hands on the mouthpiece and base. With a firm grip, carefully shake the bong up and down. Shake it until your bong is looking clear. You can empty the gross water and refill it with new salt and alcohol if needed.
- Empty the liquid
Once the bong is looking clean, empty the liquid.
- Rinse the bong with hot water
Rinse the bong with hot water. Repeat this step for a minute or two. You don’t want to smoke out of a bong that still has alcohol and salt in it.
