If you had a bad experience the last time you used marijuana, tried it a long time ago, or it’s your very first time, we suggest this game plan to help you ease right in.
There’s nothing is worse than a novice weed user being too high. Being too high may lead to an experience that is too intense and can even make you dizzy, nauseous or sick. Occasionally, you might hear a news story of someone who called 911 because the high was too intense. Doing it incorrectly the first time may make you think you don’t like marijuana and give up for good.
For your first smoke, we suggest using a bowl, pipe or a one-hitter instead of using a bong, joint, or vaporizer. This will allow you to have maximum control of your intake. With a bong or a vaporizer, you may not have a good gauge of how much smoke you are holding in your lungs because it doesn’t burn as bad. A marijuana high can take effect almost immediately when ingested by smoke which makes it easier to give you good dosage control.
When you’re ready to get started, take one hit, hold it in for a moment, exhale, then wait for about 15 minutes. The waiting part is the most important step. For a beginner, smoking three or four hits of marijuana may not seem like much but you don’t know how you will agree with the strain and potency the pot. If you’re in a social setting, do not “puff, puff, pass”—just do a “puff and pass”. Do not try to keep up with your friends who may be more experienced. Don’t be embarrassed to say, “I’m good” or “pass”. Remember, you can always incrementally take more hits but you cannot turn off the high if it is too intense.
Waiting is the most important step.
After 15 minutes, evaluate how you feel. Ask yourself if you like the feeling and if you would like to have a more intense high. Repeat these steps until you have found your desired level of high.
For edibles
Be sure to always read the label carefully. Even if you’re following the label, edibles are more unpredictable than smoking. It takes longer for the edible to break down in the stomach and absorb into the bloodstream. For your first experience wait 30 to 90 minutes before attempting to take another dose. You may mistakenly think the edible is not working and accidentally take too much. Please be patient and practice restraint.
These are all first time and beginner steps. As you smoke and consume marijuana more often you will get to know how much to use.
